Sleeping Sea Urchin: Custom 5″ My Friend Dave

This July, Giant Robot is teaming up with David Hovarth of Ugly Doll‘s fame to present a custom show of Hovarth’s Kaiju designs. The Remix Project: UglyDoll x Horvath is curated by Giant Robot and Luke Chueh and features customs by: Luke Chueh, J*Ryu, Angry Woebots, David Horvath, Yukinori Dehara Spanky Stokes, 64 Colors, Miso, A Little Stranger, Mari Inukai, Dril One, Leecifer, Kano, Scott Tolleson, Julie West. All of which will be on display at San Diego Comic Con booth #1729.

When I said ‘yes’ to the show I didn’t know what figure we were going to get to customize, so getting the package with the blank was extra exciting! My piece, the Sleeping Sea Urchin, began life as one of Hovarth‘s 5″ ‘My Friend Dave’ figure. His rounded form, bumpy tummy and spines immediately made me think of sea urchins, and I set out to create a creature inspired by their texture and pattern.
