Custom Horvath Kaiju & Big Boss Robot: Monster of the Mariana Trench
Monster of the Mariana Trench is my piece for the Giant Robot Biennale 3 exhibition, opening September 22nd at the Japanese American National Museum, LA. He started life as a David Horvath Flatwood vinyl. I created Flatwood a new face from phosphorescent polymer clay and hand painted glass eyes. I made him a set of wire legs and skinned the whole piece in soft polar fleece with iridescent stitching detail all over. His tentacles have glow-in-the-dark suckers. The submarine began as a Giant Robot Big Boss Robot, i removed his head and replaced it with a control panel made from scratch, before adding lights and a weathered finish. Monster of the Mariana Trench features phosphorescent and UV reactive elements, and looks great displayed under a blacklight.
Monster of the Mariana Trench is $450 and available to buy online from the Giant Robot store.
The third show in conjunction with Eric Nakamura, owner of Asian American pop culture juggernaut Giant Robot. Giant Robot Biennale 3Â will feature a gallery of eight emerging artists along with a customized vinyl figure collection.
Using figures designed by Uglydoll creator David Horvath, Nakamura curated Project Remix, a custom vinyl show with over 80 artists from seven countries—including the rare combination of both established customizers and fine artists.
Saturday, September 22, 2012, Japanese American National Museum, 100 North Central Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90012, USA. Giant Robot Biennale 3 runs until January 20th 2013.
